Alright, as we all know the all-new, player-owned/managed Ball4Real tour kicked off in the Great [VERY GREAT!] NorthWest in Seattle, Washington. The tour features: Mr. 720 [formerly the dunker known as Air Up There], AO, 50, Main Event, High Octane, Spyda, 1/2 Man 1/2 Amazing, Pharmacist and new acquisitions: I’ll Be Right Back, Special FX, Circus, and Killa Kirb. The B4R squad is coached by the legendary Steve Burtt [straight outta IONA baby!] while music was provided by DJ Flow and the very very very OG Boobie Smooth on the mic. Boobie is simply put THE MAN. For those that don’t know who Boobie is – go watch both EBC DVDs and he also did some of the hosting work for EBC on NBA TV. Just a legend. Moving on…
So the format of this tour is basically the same as the previous And 1 tours: they have an open run, now referred to as the “BLOCK PARTY” where they [somewhat] showcase the sponsors, they have some real nice cars on display, music, and of course the open run game itself. We got there about 45 minutes “late” so I’m not sure how sign-up worked out, but I think you could just tell them you wanted to play and it’d be a wrap. When I got there I saw VanCity’s own Ghost, Da Promise, Cloud 9, GameTime, The Problem all from Seattle/Tacoma [and BlackTop Hustler sponsored] squad: Bad Karma. Also in attendance were King Handles and Elevator and some guy that played for the Seahawks but I didn’t catch his name.
Some of the sponsors for the tour were: Wrigley [the gum manufacture], Greyhound, Mountain Dew, Starbury…damn I told myself to remember other ones but I forgot. Jay from Blacktop Hustler made some REAL REAL REAL SUPER FLY Ball 4 Real tees [like 100x better than the ones they sell for $25 that has the schedule on it] that most of the players had on. Special FX and Circus had their custom shirts on.
Open Run
AO and Shane were mainly on the mic, but different dudes were talking at different times. There was maybe about 20 people total that ended up playing in the open I would say. I don’t know how they made teams but it was just shirts/skins and they’d play. One of my boys, Delvaughn aka Deli Tha Kid just shut it down on offense, kid couldn’t be stopped and he’s only about 5′10″. Cloud 9 from Bad Karma threw it down so hard twice, he brought the HOOP DOWN BOTH TIMES and ended up permanently busting it. He would just go up, WAP and bring that thing down. Elevator tried to fix it – but he couldn’t, so they went to a half-court format, but immediately they gave him a band. So basically they went 3 on 3, different guys playing and I guess they were just trying to see who could play and who couldn’t and work with that. There were some scrubs – as always – but also some legit hoopers as well. All in all, everyone did their thing in the open run. There were some nice plays in the open run from Cloud 9, GameTime, Promise, Ghost and Deli and King Handles played this one guy on one for fun which was nice to watch. Some of the players were just chillin’ around, taking pictures and talking to people it was real good so the sense wasn’t that ‘oh look at all the players over there’. At the same time some of them dudes have REAL nice shoe games, but then again being from NY and whatnot, can’t be mad.
Now the high lite of the open run, at least in my eyes, was the little dancing that a few of the players got into. High Rizer, I’ll BRB, High Octane and Special FX and a little bit from Circus. FX is just a MACK when it comes to dancing. He had his little chicken noodle soup going on – they played that track over and over..The rest of the guys are real goofs, you can just tell by the way they are with each other.
In all there was 12 people including Elevator and KH that made it into the building and that made the Seattle team. Those players included: KH, Elevator, Ghost, GameTime, Cloud 9, Deli, Da Promise and some other people that I didn’t know including this one kid…OMG his resemblance to Professor was just UNCANNY! The eyes, haircut, everything – he seemed like a good kid though, real happy to be playing in the game even though he didn’t do much but he was quick as hell and got to play KH one on one.
Oh yeah there was also a freestyle rap battle and this white dude who was like a cross between a rock, rap, basketball fan won it. Obviously I didn’t catch too many of the words but my people said he was real nice. Deli was in it too and the kid can spit! They also gave out a few awards for cars and whatnot..I didn’t look into it much because I’m not much of a tuner fan but you know it was nice nonetheless.
The Game
The gym was…not really packed I would say. I’m bad with guess-timating so I don’t know how many people were there – maybe 1000? Maybe less, I really don’t know but the first 5-10 rows on both sides were more or less full as was the courtside seating. The layout and everything resembled an And 1 game and Boobie Smooth was getting into the crowd, interacting with everyone. They had a pre-game dunk off and the finalists were Cloud 9 [who pulled a CLEAN cradle jam] and Elevator. At half time during the game they went for the winner and I think it was Cloud 9 who won…Not 100% sure as I wasn’t paying attention.
Okay I’m tired as hell, gonna watch 48 Hours, sleep and finish the rest with pictures tomorrow…
